INTRODUCTION

In 2006, Narayana Peesapaty (Peesapaty) - a scientist in groundwater research at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI ) - resigned from his comfortable job, driven by his deep concern over plastic being used as cutlery. Being a scientist, he understood the long-term consequences of the toxic effects of plastic as cutlery on the people, the environment, and the Earth. With 120 billion pieces of plastic cutlery consigned to garbage bins every year in India, it posed a great threat to the consumers, directly through contact, as well as indirectly through its ill-effects on the environment..
